Pakistani's arrived in Australia on Scholarship
Last week the Australian High Commission arranged a farewell reception in
Islamabad for Twenty-two Pakistani awardees of Australian Scholarships. The
Pakistani students will undertake masters-level study in Australia in the areas
of health, education, environment, governance, public administration and
information technology in the 2008 academic year. The scholarships have been
awarded under the Australian Development Scholarships and the AusAID-Carnegie
Mellon University Scholarships Program. Up to 1000 Australian Development
Scholarships are awarded each year across 31 countries with scholarships awarded
equally between men and women.
The chief guest of the function, the Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan Ms
Zorica McCarthy said the scholarships were intended for those who are already
leaders or have the potential to assume leadership roles, which influence social
and economic policy reform and development outcomes, both within Pakistan and
the region.
"The Australian scholarships program aims to contribute to the long-term
development needs of Pakistan to promote good governance, economic growth and
human development," Ms McCarthy said.
"Scholarship holders are expected to return to their country of citizenship at
the completion of their studies for a minimum of two years in order to
contribute to the development of their country. Many previous scholarship
holders have become leaders in government, the private sector and in the
international development sector."
These scholarships will provide Pakistani professionals with the necessary
skills and knowledge to drive change and influence the development outcomes in
Pakistan through obtaining relevant tertiary qualifications at Australian
institutions.
