A BRIEF REPORT ABOUT THE PAKISTAN DAY CELEBRATION IN NEW ZEALAND
To mark the Pakistan Day,
the High Commissioner of Pakistan in New Zealand Syed Ibne Abbas hosted a
Reception at the Wellington Club. Hon. Hekia Parata, Minister for Women’s
Affairs, Ethnic Affairs, the Acting Minister of Energy and Resources, and
Associate Minister for ACC and for the Community and Voluntary Sector,
represented the Government of New Zealand on the occasion. Opposition Labour
Party amongst several MPs was represented by Hon. Maryan Street, Spokesperson
for Foreign Affairs.
Most of the 12 members MPs representing the both sides of the aisle of the
recently formed New Zealand-Pakistan Parliamentary Friendship Group including
Chairperson Ross Robertson were also present on the occasion.
The Reception was attended by over 180 local dignitaries, including several
Members of Parliament, senior civil and military officials, High Commissioners,
Ambassadors and members of the Pakistani-Kiwi community.
Earlier, in the morning, a simple and an elegant flag hoisting ceremony was held
at the Chancery. Community members living in Wellington and adjoining areas
attended the ceremony. As customary, on the occasion, messages of the President
and the Prime Minister were read out.
The High Commissioner Syed Ibne Abbas in his remarks expressed gratitude to the
Pakistan-Kiwi community members for their generous contribution towards the
flood affected people of Pakistan fund as well as the Christchurch earthquake.
