Lord Mayor of Sydney donated $ 50,000 for Pakistan(Media Release to Sada-e-Watan From PEACC)
Clover Moore, the Lord Mayor of Sydney donated $50,000 last night for the victims of South-Asian earthquake. City of Sydney passed a Lord Mayoral minute to support the appeal as well making its halls available to community for fundraising events. Pakistan Earthquake Appeal Coordination Committee's (PEACC) has been driving the earthquake appeal in local government and councils across New South Wales are responding to its efforts. "Lord Mayor Clover Moore is a humanist of a rare kind and she has set a great example of compassionate leadership", said PEACC's Coordinator Councillor Saeed Khan (Marrickville). City of Sydney also donated $50,000 for the victims of Asian Tsunami last year. In recent weeks, a number of NSW councils have responded to PEACC's appeal. So far, Marrickville, Waverly, Leichhardt, Randwick, Canterbury, and Parramatta have donated amounts of $5,000 and Cessnock has donated $1000. Many more councils are set to donate similar amounts in coming weeks. Mr Khalil Allahwala of PEACC expressed community's gratitude to all councils for their contribution to earthquake appeal. PEACC has also thanked Senator Bob Brown for his efforts in convincing the Australian Government to pledge further $3 million earlier last week. Senator Brown launched PEACC's appeal earlier in October and has been a vocal supporter in Canberra throughout. PEACC also acknowledged the efforts of Federal Labour MP Laurie Ferguson and his office in driving the appeal. Earlier last week, NSW MLC Lee Rhiannon (Greens) met with Premier Morris Iemma on PEACC's behalf. Ms Rhiannon called on Premier Iemma to donate $250,000 to earthquake relief efforts. Mr Iemma committed to donating and is expected to make an announcement sometime soon. |
