In Canberra, General Musharraf and
Prime Minister John Howard witnessed the signing of an Australia-Pakistan
agreement on counter-terrorism. "I've told the President how much I personally,
and the Australian Government, admires his courageous participation and that of
his country in the fight against terrorism," Mr Howard said. "He himself has
survived two assassination attempts. It's a measure of the danger he has exposed
himself to in participating in that fight." The understanding covers law
enforcement, intelligence, security and border controls. Mr Howard expressed
appreciation for Gen Musharraf's role in the warming of relations between
Pakistan and India. "Both of those countries have long historical ties with
Australia. We have much in common, and we look forward to a consolidation and a
continuation of that process," he said. Gen Musharraf says he has invited Mr
Howard to visit Pakistan as part of an attempt to open a new era in relations
with Australia. He says his country needs trade and investment help from
Australia. "We highlighted specially the issue of agriculture, dairy farming,
livestock farming, mineral development, as areas of focus where Australia could
assist Pakistan," he said.
