Musharraf addressed the National Press Club in Canberra

The President, General Pervez Musharraf, says Pakistan is playing a pivotal role in the fight against terrorism for world security and development. He was addressing the National Press Club of Australia in Canberra today. The theme of the President's address was "Pakistan - a link for world security and development". President Musharraf said terrorism was anti-progress and a threat to modern societies, and Pakistan rejected terrorism. He said Pakistan was winning the war against terrorism, having broken Al-Qaeda's network in the country. 700 Al-Qaeda members had been arrested in Pakistan. The president said no country had done as much as Pakistan in eliminating terrorism. Referring to the India Pakistan peace process, he said Pakistan was trying to reach a solution of the Kashmir dispute according to the wishes of the Kashmiri people. President Musharraf said a just settlement of Kashmir would usher in a new era of durable peace and brighten the future for the people of South Asia. The President said Pakistan was opposed to nuclear proliferation. It was also opposed to an arms race, both conventional and un-conventional. He said Pakistan's nuclear assets were in safe hands. Referring to democracy in Pakistan, President Musharraf said grass roots level democracy had been introduced, and the media had been given unprecedented independence. He said Pakistan's economy during the past five years had progressed, and the country had achieved 8.4 percent growth in the last financial year. President said there were vast opportunities for investment in Pakistan. President Pervez Musharraf urged Australia to help in the war on terror by improving its dismal trade record with his poverty-stricken country, but stressed that the Al-Qaeda terror network no longer functions cohesively in Pakistan. Australian investment in Pakistan would provide jobs and build industries, helping ease the poverty which drives people into militant groups, he said. "When you assist us in our industry you are indirectly assisting us in fighting terrorism," Musharraf told an Australian Press Club audience in Canberra. "No other country in the world has done what Pakistan has done," he added. "We occupied their sanctuaries and they are now on the run.”
