President Musharraf’s State Welcome in Parliament House Canberra

President General Pervez Musharraf was accorded state welcome at the Parliament House, where Australian Governor General Maj Gen (Retd) Michael Jeffery and Prime Minister John Howard received the visiting Pakistani leader. A 21-gun salute boomed as the President arrived for the ceremony for a rare reception at the Parliament House. The presence of both the Governor General the Australian Head of State, and the Australia Prime Minister at the ceremony also signified growing relations between the two countries. The national anthems of Pakistan and Australia were played as the flags of the two countries fluttered amid wintry breeze of the Southern hemisphere. The President reviewed the guard of honour presented by a contingent of the Australian Federation Guards. The Australian leaders introduced the President of the Senate and Speaker of the House to President Musharraf. The President introduced the members of his delegation to the Australian Governor General and the Prime Minister. Later, the President visited the Australian War Memorial. He laid a wreath and observed a minute's silence at the grave of the Unknown Soldier, dedicated to the Australians who lost their lives in wars. He also signed in the visitors' book. President Musharraf is the first Pakistani leader to visit Australia. He is accompanied by First Lady Begum Sehba Musharraf. The President's delegation includes Minister for Industries Jehangir Khan Tareen, Chairman Higher Education Commission Dr Atta ur Rehman, Chairman Export Promotion Bureau Tariq Ikram, Secretary Information Shahid Rafi and Secretary Foreign Affairs Riaz Muhammad Khan.
