Australian Government & Shaoquett Moselmane MLC Condemns Assassination of Governor Punjab Salman Tasser

Behalf of the Government and People of Australia, Acting Foreign Minister Mr.Martin Ferguson has condemned the assassination of the governor of Pakistan's Punjab province, saying it will hamper efforts to create peace and stability in the country.

Salman Taseer was one of Pakistan's most moderate voices against radical Islam and the encroaching menace of the Taliban and al-Qaeda. The 66-year-old was shot dead by a member of his own security detail outside an upmarket cafe in Islamabad on Tuesday 4th Jan 2011.

"The death of Governor Taseer is a significant loss to the people of Pakistan and efforts to bring peace and stability to that country," Mr Ferguson said in a statement.

"Our thoughts and sympathies are with Governor Taseer's wife and children during this difficult time."

Mr Ferguson said Australia remained committed to assisting Pakistan and its people overcome its "security, economic and governance challenges".

Hon.Shaoquett Moselmane MLC sends a SMS to the Editor-in-Chief Sada-e-Watan.

 Dear Friend Zafar Hussain,

Governor Salman Taseer whom we recently met in our NSW Parliamentary Goodwill Visit. Our condolences to his family, his Party, the People of Punjab and the People of Pakistan. This is yet another senseless killing we must all condemn.

From the Sydney Morning Herald yesterday morning:

The killing was the most high profile assassination of a political figure in Pakistan since the slaying of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto in December of 2007.Punjab Governor Salman Taseer was a high profile member of Bhutto’s Pakistan People’s Party and a close associate of President Asif Ali Zardari, Bhutto’s widower. Taseer was vocal on a range of subjects, including speaking out against the country’s blasphemy law in recent days. Islamists in Pakistan have defended the controversial law and slammed those who oppose it.

I prayed for the departed soul and conveyed his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.

 Regards,

Shaoquett Moselmane
