Australia will provide $5 Million Assistance to Pakistan following devastating Floods
The Government of Australia will provide $5 million in assistance to help the people of Pakistan adversely affected by the devastation and destruction caused by the worst floods to hit Pakistan since 1929.
The flash floods that followed torrential monsoonal rains in north-west Pakistan between 28 and 30 July have caused great loss of life and wide-spread damage to infrastructure, livestock and property in more than 100 villages. The Pakistan Disaster Management Authority has confirmed more than 1,100 deaths and estimates that more than 1.5 million people have been adversely affected. The risk of water borne diseases, including Cholera, is of great concern.
Australia will provide an immediate $2 million of humanitarian assistance through the United Nations-managed Pakistan Emergency Response Fund and the International Red Cross/Crescent Movement. An estimated 150,000 families require immediate emergency assistance such as food, clean drinking water, tents, and medical services. An additional $3 million package will be provided to help humanitarian agencies, including Australian Non-Government Organizations, in Pakistan assist with recovery and rebuilding following the disaster.
