A visiting Australian Parliamentary delegation called on the Governor NWFP Khalil-ur-Rehman at the Governor’s House. The delegation, led by Peter Lindsay, Member for Queensland of the Australian Parliament, also included Harry Quick, Member for Franklin; Peter Slipper, Member for Fisher, and Ruth Stephanie, Senator for Western Australia whereas the Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan also accompanied the delegation.
The Governor apprised the guests about the salient features of the historical background of the geographical importance together with the prevailing system of governance both of the province as well as FATA. The entire region especially the provincial metropolis, the governor said, enjoys unique position in the history and is still enjoying great attraction from many aspects especially from economic, trade and tourism point of view. Responding to various points raised by the delegates, the governor said local government system was found quite successful and people had shown keen interest in the first phase of the LG elections which was clear testimony of it. For the second phase of the elections, he added, the government has made fool proof arrangements to ensure honouring the verdict of the people.

Referring to another point, he remarked, “we have a lot of mineral deposits in FATA especially the copper and marble and every effort is under way to introduce modern ways and means for their exploitation.” In response to the keen interest expressed by the delegates, the governor informed that the copper deposits, found in FATA, were of highly good quality which was receiving great attraction from the entrepreneurs including certain Australian firms. The government is making all out efforts to facilitate investors and initiatives taken so far have been proving fruitful.
