Kashmir Solidarity Day Observed in Canberra on 05 February 2009

Kashmir Solidarity Day was observed in Canberra on Thursday 5th February 2009, at Grema Place in Civic from 12:30pm to 1:00 pm. The peaceful rally was organized by the Kashmir Solidarity Council of Canberra. This rally was arranged on very short notice by inviting family & friends, the rally’s organizers expressed solidarity with Kashmiris in their rights to self determination. The coordinator Mr. Iqbal Khan delivered an opening speech to highlight the lingering Kashmir issue to the general public by reading UN resolution on Kashmir cause. The other speaker was President of Pakistan Australia Friendship Association Canberra, Mr Khawar Saleem Khan, who also highlighted the right of Kashmir’s self determination and its implementation as per UN resolution which is the only solution of Kashmir dispute. Mr. Khan also highlighted efforts of both governments (Pakistan/India) to resolve the issue in the recent years.

The other members of Kashmir Solidarity council distributed printed material pamphlets about the Kashmir cause to general public in the event. Although there was not a huge crowd around there due to upcoming ACT Multicultural Festival starting from 06 February 2009, many people still attended the rally and listened to the views of respected speakers.

The younger generation was also seen in the event and showed their full interest and realized the importance of Kashmir issue. They also joined the rally and helped to hold the play cards to the general audience. They also assured their support to Kashmir Solidarity Council (KSCC) for future events. A significant number of ladies also attended the rally & expressed their views supporting the Kashmir cause. The Kashmir peaceful rally ended at 1 pm.
