In December 2009 Imam Adama Konda relocated with his family from Darwin to take the role of full time Imam at the Canberra Islamic Centre. The Executive Committee is indeed very thankful to Imam Konda for his services and in particular for the establishment of regular daily prayer services in Jammat at the Centre. Alhumdulillah, his presence and leading of the Jummah prayers has seen our Jummah congregation steadily increasing over the last 12 months to numbers in excess of 350.
In addition, the Imam oversees the running of a range of activities for the community that includes classes for children, women and men including Arabic, Quranic and Islamic classes. He also provides marriage and counseling services as well as undertaking Dawah work by visiting schools in the ACT and for visitors at the Centre.
Over the past year Imam Konda has assisted the Islamic school of Canberra (ISC) as one of their regular religious instructor. While the tenure with the ISC is now over, this allows the services of the Imam to be extended to providing the CICs National Australian Islamic Library with valued input including advice and guidance on the range of matters including holdings currently being catalogued. Furthermore, his expertise as an educator of children will be invaluable in the establishment of a section of the Islamic Library catering specifically for children and the youth.
For all this great work to continue and expand the Executive Committee is seeking your financial support to fund the ongoing employment of Imam Konda. To this end this special fundraising dinner is being held and your generous contribution is needed.
We urge all Muslim Community to participate in this event and show your appreciation and support for this tremendous work that Imam Konda is undertaking. Without such financial support from the community, the position of an Imam at CIC may become untenable beyond this (2011) year.
The Executive takes this opportunity to reassure all members that efforts are also progressing with preparatory work on Phase Two the CIC complex, ie the construction of a dedicated place of prayer (Masjid). The traditional annual fundraising dinner at the end of June is and continues to be dedicated for this purpose.
