Sylvia
Alafaci Elected Deputy Mayor of the City of Canada Bay Sydney
Councillor Sylvia
Alafaci has been elected Deputy Mayor of the City of Canada Bay,
following a vote at the Public Council Meeting held on Tuesday, 15 September
2026, at the Canada Bay Civic Centre in Drummoyne, New South Wales.
Her election as Deputy Mayor represents an
important milestone in her service to the City of Canada Bay and reflects her
continuing commitment to representing the interests of residents, local
businesses and the wider community.
Councillor Alafaci was elected to the City of
Canada Bay Council in 2024 and, since joining Council, has been actively
involved in representing residents and participating in matters affecting the
future of the local government area. Her work as a Councillor has given her the
opportunity to engage closely with members of the community and contribute to
discussions concerning the needs, priorities and ongoing development of the
City of Canada Bay.
The City of Canada Bay is one of Sydney’s
diverse and dynamic local government areas, bringing together established
residential communities, growing urban centres, businesses and people from many
different cultural backgrounds. Councillor Alafaci’s longstanding involvement
with multicultural communities has complemented her work in local government
and has been an important part of her broader community engagement.
Beyond her responsibilities as a Councillor,
Councillor Alafaci has for many years been actively involved in community,
business and multicultural initiatives.
She is Secretary of the Australian Business
Summit Council Inc. (ABSC Inc.), a not-for-profit organisation that encourages
greater engagement between the Australian and international business
communities. Through this work, she has been involved in initiatives bringing
together business leaders, entrepreneurs, community representatives and members
of the diplomatic corps.
Councillor Alafaci is also a co-founder of EKONOMOS,
a business affairs magazine which provides a platform for contributions from
representatives of business, academia, government, diplomacy and the wider
community.
Her work through these initiatives has enabled
her to develop strong relationships across business and multicultural
communities and to participate in activities designed to encourage dialogue,
cooperation and greater understanding between people from different
professional and cultural backgrounds.
Councillor Alafaci’s community involvement has
also included service through Rotary and participation in a wide range of
multicultural and community activities.
Throughout these different roles, she has
maintained a strong interest in community participation and in bringing people
and organisations together. Her experience across local government, community
engagement and business networks has provided her with a broad perspective on
the importance of collaboration and constructive relationships in serving local
communities.
Her election as Deputy Mayor begins a new
chapter in her contribution to the City of Canada Bay.
In this role, she will continue serving
alongside the Mayor, fellow Councillors and Council
staff while representing residents across the local government area.
For Councillor Alafaci, the appointment is
also an opportunity to continue strengthening her engagement with the many
communities that contribute to the social, cultural and economic life of the
City of Canada Bay.
The City of Canada Bay is home to residents
from many different backgrounds, and Councillor Alafaci’s extensive involvement
in multicultural and community activities has given her the opportunity to meet
and work with people from a wide variety of organisations and communities.
Her election as Deputy Mayor therefore
represents not only an important personal milestone, but also a further
opportunity for public service.
As she takes on the responsibilities of Deputy
Mayor, Councillor Sylvia Alafaci looks forward to continuing her contribution
to the City of Canada Bay and working for the benefit of its residents,
businesses and diverse communities.
