Why Labor Party must be re – elected

By: Solicitor Ejaz Khan (Former President of the Pakistan Association of Australia)
It is now only few weeks to vote in the new federal government. The fight is between the Liberal Party under Tony Abbot which failed to deliver much during their eleven years in the office and the Labor Party under Julia Gillard which in very short time has delivered so much. The contrast between them is so much and the choice is stark. There is the Liberal Party with spin and the grubby politics versus a political party which cares about the people. If the government changes than the country changes for ever.
During the Liberals term in the government, the much needed infra-structure such as roads did not take place, health services was deliberately let go down hill, education was low in priority and so was broadband infrastructure and likewise so was many other things.
In the two and half years of Labor Government there has been the biggest investment in the health and the education sector. The Abbot led government plans to wind back the Labor’s computer programme for the schools. It also plans to wind back the infrastructure developments currently happening in the schools.
Yes, there have been some problems in schools infrastructure. This is limited to about 240 schools out of the 20,000 school that participated in this scheme. This programme was part of the plans to avert the global financial crisis that had griped around the world at that time.
If you can recall that the Liberal Party prided itself as the better economic managers and the interest rate would always be lower under them. Guess what, the interest is at present lower than what the Liberal Party left with.
Australia under Labor has been the only country in the western world to avert the impact of the economic crisis. This did not happen by the accident but deliberate effort by the Labor Government to keep the country afloat.
One must remember under the Labor government it has seen the lowest unemployment rate in the western world. If you can recall only few months a go the Liberal Party was saying that it needed to bring parts of the nasty old work choices back and only now to concede that it’s working fine. Tony Abbot says different things on the industrial legislation on a different day. He cannot be trusted. He himself admits to say things when he does not mean it.
Liberal Party makes much out of the boat people and the national security. Under the United Nation Convention, Australia is suppose to take 12,000 refugees. The truth is that neither under the Liberal or the Labor it has exceeded 7,000. So what is the fuss now? It is just plain race card?
One must not forget under the Liberal the Tampa Crisis and Dr Haneef affair. It has a great track history of creating a crisis when it does not exists. How about the publicity material that was distributed in the Penrith and selecting a candidate to run for the seat of Chiefly who divides the country based on religion. There is only one party that has bad track record on this that happens to be the Liberal Party.
The Labor Party has done much in the last two years. It has taken on some of the difficult tasks that no one wanted to touch like apologising to the stolen generation. No one could have dreamt of that happening under the Liberal Party. How about the agreement reached between the states and the Federal Government on Health. Only one party who could achieve this and this was the Labor Party. Only one party that could bring the national legislation on OH&S and that was the Labor Party.
The Labor Party must be re- elected for great works and the reforms to continue. Only the Labor Party does not believe on division based on the religion and the race. I urge you to vote the Australian Labor Party for the secure Australia.
