To commemorate the Independence Day of Pakistan, a flag hoisting ceremony was held in the morning at Chancery premises on Monday 14th August 2006.  The ceremony was attended by a large number of Pakistanis with their families as well as Australians. The ceremony was covered by the local print and electronic media. After the flag hoisting, the High Commissioner His Excellency Mr. Babar W. Malik briefly addressed the gathering. In his speech he congratulated the Pakistani Community on the important Independence Day of Pakistan. Mr. Babar Malik also said that the nation is celebrating its 59th independence day with great zeal & fervour and a renewed pledge to work hard for making the country a strong, developed, moderate and democratic Islamic welfare State. High Commissioner Mr. Babar Malik read out the messages of President General Pervez Musharraf and Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz. He read the messages respectively and briefly highlighted the importance of the day emphasizing on the community members to forge unity and work harder for promoting Pakistan’s image abroad.

President Pervez Musharraf said the defence of the country has been made impregnable, much needed political- economic stability attained and now focus is on transferring benefits of economic gains to the people. He said there are elected governments at all tiers and representatives of the people are present right from the national, provincial and down to the grass root level. The President said the country has achieved economic stability as result of consistency and transparency of government policies and now the people stand to benefit socio economically. The President referred to a host of developing projects for the fast pace socio economic uplift of the country. He said the reforms and policies during the last seven years have led to many achievements in all fields.
