Alexander Downer
FM Alexander Downer statement about declaration of emergency in Pakistan
Australia is very
concerned about the declaration of a state of emergency in Pakistan. Pakistan
faces difficult security circumstances and a number of serious challenges to its
stability. Australia’s strong view remains, however, that democracy and the rule
of law are an essential part of achieving peace and stability.
Protection of civil rights of the Pakistani people, the ability of political
parties to operate and freedom of Pakistan’s strong media and judicial system
are central requirements if Pakistan is to complete the transition back to
democracy that its leadership has committed itself to pursuing. Australia urges
the earliest possible return to democratic processes and constitutional rule in
Pakistan. We call on all parties in Pakistan to exercise restraint and calm in
these difficult times.
