Forum Australia's Organized in Canberra Seminar on Pakistan
The High Commissioner for Pakistan to Australia Mr. Jalil Abbas Jilani was invited as the Keynote Speaker at a seminar on Pakistan arranged by Forum Australia at Kashmir Restaurant, Narrabundah Canberra on Saturday 20th June 2009. The other speakers included Dr. Christopher Snedden, Deakin University and Professor William Maley, Australian National University, who are known for their expertise on South Asian affairs. The subject of the seminar was “Pakistan Facing Challenges – The Way Forward”, and it was attended by local political leaders, diplomats, intellectuals and academicians. While welcoming the participants, Mr. Mohammad Ali explained the objectives of the seminar which was moderated by Dr. Zakir Rahmani.
Professor Snedden crisply highlighted the positives and strengths of Pakistan and proposed a three “S” strategy (structural change, statesmanship and secularism) as way forward for the Pakistani nation. Professor William Maley explored the historical links between Pakistan and Australia and recounted the development of political culture in Pakistan in the post independence period. Appreciating the recent positive socio-cultural changes and revitalization of the civil society, he underpinned the need for generous international support to Pakistan to meet the current security and development challenges.
Speaking at the seminar, the High Commissioner Syed Jalil Abbas Jilani enlisted the challenges faced by Pakistan and briefly traced their roots to internal and regional developments. H.E. Jalil Jilani stated that instability in Afghanistan and regressive relations with India continues to be a source of serious concern to Pakistan. The High Commissioner pointed out the recent positive developments in the political, economic and social fields in Pakistan, which testify the resilience and resolve of the people and Government of Pakistan to overcome these challenges. Syed Jalil Abbas Jilani expressed Pakistan’s Commitment to fight terrorism and determination to root out this menace from the country. He explained the Government of Pakistan’s three “D” policy (Dialogue, Deterrence, and Development) to deal with terrorism. He also highlighted various policy options for Pakistan, regional countries and international community to ensure a peaceful and stable South Asia.
Following an interesting question answer section, Mr. Javed Butt delivered the vote of thanks. Mr. Nickware and Ms Salowah Kirk availed the opportunity to passionately appeal for donations to the internally displaced people of Swat and surrounding areas.
