Sub Continent Friends of Labor Delegation Visits Federal Parliament Canberra
Recently second set members of the Sub Continent Friends of Labor made their visit to Canberra.This trip was hosted by newly elected New South Wales Senator Matt Thistlewaite. It was during the term of Senator Matt Thistlewaite as the General Secretary of the New South Wales of Labor Party that the friends of Labor Party concept was born.
The idea of the trip was not only to thank the Sub Continent Friends of Labor active members but also for them to outline the concern within the Sub Continent Community as each of the member of this group have a huge involvement within their community or communities.
During the trip there was a opportunity for to meet the first Member of Parliament at Federal Parliamentary level of person of Sub Continent origin Senator Lisa Singh.Senator Singh's parents are from Fiji and she herself was born in Tasmania.
Also a painting of Prime Minister Julia Gillard was presented for her autograph. This picture is to be auctioned at the Sub Continent Friends of Labor next dinner which is to take place in Sydney.
One of the interesting part of the tour was the House of Representatives question time. This was a day after the carbon tax bill was passed and also the Malaysia deal that was brought to end as result of lack of support from the Liberal Party. During this time the Sub Continent Friends of Labor Team witnessed the demolition of Leader of Opposition Tony Abbott
It was a great pleasure to meet the Sub-Continent Friends of Labor on Thursday 13th October and welcome them to Parliament House in Canberra. "said Senator Thistlewaite.
"The day was a great opportunity to open the dialogue with these community and business leaders and hear their unique feedback regarding the issues that concern them.
"This organisation is doing the groundwork to build on the established links that exist between the sub-continent community and Labor, and their participation is necessary to the party’s development. I encourage Australians from the sub-continent to participate in this tremendous society, and look forward to continuing my engagement with the group into the future."
