Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Ehsan Ul Haq is in Australia

General Ehsan Ul Haq, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, who is on a week-long visit from November 6 to 11 to Australia, held wide ranging talks with senior military and political leadership.
In Canberra, General Ehsan Ul Haq, called on Foreign Minister Alexander Downer, and Defence Minister Brendan Nelson. Call on Defence Minister was also attended by Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, Chief of Australian Defence Forces. These parleys are part of efforts by both the countries to take their evolving defence relationship to a mutually beneficial and meaningful level. The High Commissioner of Pakistan Mr. Babar Malik was also present during the meetings.
In a comprehensive review of existing defense ties, it was decided to expand the spectrum of cooperation and collaboration to include training, Defence Technology, Intelligence sharing and logistics. Among the major issues discussed were Pakistan’s cardinal role in GWOT and the success achieved so far. Both the Ministers appreciated the contributions made by the Pakistan. Chairman JCSC apprised the Australian Ministers about the resolve of Pakistani Government to fight terrorism and the comprehensive strategy being followed based on experience and pragmatic analysis. He emphasized that there was a requirement to address the root causes of terrorism and issues like Palestine, Iraq, and Kashmir need to be resolved on priority.
General Ehsan is also scheduled to hold wide ranging strategic dialogue with senior officials from Australian defence and Foreign Ministries besides Office of National Assessment.

Biography of General Ehsan Ul Haq

Gen Ehsan ul Haq was born on September 22, 1949. He got commission in Pakistan Army in 1969 in self-propelled regiment of Army Air Defence. General Ehsan Ul Haq, NI (M) was commissioned in a Self Propelled Light Air Defence Regiment in October 1969.  He  has the distinction of commanding an Air Defence Regiment, an Air Defence Brigade and an Infantry Brigade, an Air Defence Division, an Infantry Division and an elite Corps of the Pakistan Army; almost all involved in active operations.

The General is a graduate of Command and Staff College Quetta, and has also attended the Armed Forces War Course at the National Defence College, Islamabad as well as various courses in Saudi Arabia, China and the United States. 

General Ehsan Ul Haq, NI (M) has held various Instructional and staff appointments at a number of Institutions/Directorate of the Pakistan Army. He has also served as Deputy Military Secretary in the Military Secretary Branch at General Headquarters. He held the portfolio of Director General Military Intelligence at General Headquarters and remained Director General Inter Services Intelligence thereafter.

In recognition of his meritorious services to the Army, he has been conferred the award of Nishan-i-Imtiaz (Military). He is also the recipient of the 'King Abdul Aziz Excellence Medal' from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Legion d’ Honneur from the Republic of France.

He was promoted Brigadier in June 1992 and Major General in June 1996. On promotion to the rank of Lieutenant General, he was appointed Corps Commander. He was elevated to the rank of General in October 2004, and appointed as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee.

He is married and has two sons & two daughters. The General has widely traveled and is a keen golfer as well as an avid reader.
