The Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Pakistan Army General Tariq Majid is officially visiting Australia. The Consul General of Pakistan Mr. Azam Mohammed welcomed him at Sydney Airport on the early Morning of Monday, 18th May 2009. In Canberra The High Commissioner of Pakistan Mr. Jalil Abbas Jilani, Brig. Babar Mansour Virek Defence Advisor of Pakistan High Commission Australia and high ranked Australian Military officials welcomed General Tariq Majid.
In Canberra ,General Tariq Majid met with Australia’s Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon and his military counterpart, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston. The High Commissioner of Pakistan H.E. Syed Jalil Abbas Jilani was present during the meetings.
The Defence Minister of Australia Mr. Fitzgibbon expressed his sorrow for the losses suffered by the Pakistan Armed Forces in the fight against terrorism, and for the suffering of the civilian populations as a result of the recent fighting.
General Tariq Majid said that Pakistan appreciates the role played by Australia as part of the Coalition Forces in Afghanistan, and emphasized that Pakistan and Australia have common interests and shared objectives in promoting peace and stability in the region. Pakistan and Australia have agreed to boost cooperation for curbing terrorism. Pakistan will send 70 military personnel to Australia to get counter insurgency training training. The Pak-Aus dignitary meetings focused on matters of regional security, strategic cooperation and enhancement of defence ties between the two countries.
