On Friday, 22 June 2007 at
the Government House Canberra, His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery, AC
CVO MC (Retd) Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia received from
His Excellency Mr. Jalil Abbas Jilani, Letters of Commission accrediting him as
High Commissioner for the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
The High Commissioner was accompanied by Mr. Tanveer A. Khaskheli (Deputy High
Commissioner); and Brigadier Imran Malik (Defence Adviser), High Commission of
the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Canberra Australia. The Governor-General and
Her Excellency Mrs. Marlena Jeffery also received Mrs. Shaista Jilani.
The credential ceremony was followed by a lunch hosted by the Governor General
attended by a large number Australian dignitaries.
Governor General His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery while recalling
the visit of President Pervez Musharraf to Australia in 2005 stated that
Australia considered Pakistan as an important country in the region. He
expressed satisfaction that relations between Australia and Pakistan were
witnessing an upward trend.
Governor General of Australia said offered tremendous opportunities for
Australian businessmen to do business with. He also praised Pakistan’s efforts
in fighting international terrorism.
The Governor General Jeffery said that Australia was keenly watching the
regional situation including Pakistan-India dialogue and the situation in
Afghanistan. GG also said that a large number of Pakistani students studying in
Australian Universities under a scholarship scheme announced by the Australian
Government would strengthen Pakistan-Australia bonds.
New High Commissioner of Pakistan Syed Jalil Abbas Jilani conveyed the greetings
and best wishes of President Pervez Musharraf, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and
the people of Pakistan to the Government and people of Australia.
Mr. Jilani said that Pakistan and Australia enjoyed close and cordial relations
and the two countries shared a common desire to have peace and stability in the
region including Afghanistan. Pakistan-Australia trade and economic relations
were showing an upward trend so were the defence ties.
Mr. Jalil Abbas Jilani thanked the Australian Government for their earthquake
assistance, the scholarship programme and the Australian Government’s
understanding and support to Pakistan’s efforts against terrorism.
