High Commissioner Jalil Abbas Jilani met Speaker Parliament of Australia Hon. David Hawker

The High Commissioner of Pakistan Mr. Jalil Abbas Jilani called on the Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. David Hawker at the Parliament’s House Canberra. This first official meeting focused on mutual interest. Mr. Jalil Jilani said that in recent years Parliamentary delegation had help expansion of relations between the two countries.

Mr David Hawker is the 27th Speaker of the House. He has been a Member of Parliament since 1983 representing the Victorian electorate of Wannon, having taken over from the former Prime Minister, Malcolm Fraser. Mr Hawker was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives on 16 November 2004.
Mr Hawker has served on a number of Parliamentary Committees and was Chair of the Financial Institutions and Public Administration from 30.5.96 to 31.8.98 and Economics, Finance and Public Administration from 9.12.98. He has represented the Parliament on a number of delegations and conferences and has been a Member of the Speaker's Panel since 1998.Before entering the Commonwealth Parliament, Mr Hawker was a farmer and grazier. He has a BE from the University of Melbourne.
The Speaker is the principal office holder in the House of Representatives. In addition to basic work as a Member, the Speaker presides at meetings of the House, represents the Chamber in dealings with Government and with other authorities, and in conjunction with the President of the Senate, oversees the Parliament's administration.
