Jehangir Karamat Meets Pakistani Community in Newcastle

Even though Pakistan has
consistently shunned a nonproliferation treaty, it was amongst the 15-member
International Commission on Nuclear Nonproliferation and Disarmament, which met
in Sydney last week. Australia’s former foreign minister, Gareth Evans
co-chaired the event with Yoriko Kawaguchi, an ex-foreign minister in Japan.
Evans has recently said all nuclear powers _ including those who have refused to
join the nonproliferation treaty such as India, Pakistan, North Korea and Israel
_ must be included in the new process if the world is to ever achieve
Ex-army chief Jehangir Karamat was amongst the delegates, and represented
Pakistan. General (retd) Jehangir Karamat is the former Chief of Army Staff of
the Pakistan Army from January 1996 to October 1998 and a former Pakistan
Ambassador to the United States from November 2004 to June 2006. He is also one
of very few Army chiefs to have resigned over a disagreement with the civilian
authorities.
General Jehangir Karamat, along with his wife was visiting Sydney last week in
order to attend the Commission’s first meeting. During their visit, General and
Mrs Karamat got a chance to meet some of the Pakistani-Australian community
members who organised a dinner in their honour in Newcastle. General Karamat
responded to a range of questions, and commented on a number of issues as well.
General and Mrs Karamat have now flown back to Lahore, but have expressed the
hope to return to Sydney soon.
