Mr. Jalil Abbas Jilani today
(22.6.2007) presented his Letters of Commission as the High Commissioner for
Pakistan to Australia to the Governor General Major General Michael Jeffery (Retd)
at a ceremony at the Government House Canberra. The credential ceremony was followed by a
lunch hosted by the Governor General attended by a large number Australian
dignitaries.
2. In his remarks the Governor General while recalling the visit of President
Pervez Musharraf to Australia in 2005 stated that Australia considered Pakistan
as an important country in the region. He expressed satisfaction that relations
between Australia and Pakistan were witnessing an upward trend. Pakistan, he
said offered tremendous opportunities for Australian businessmen to do business
with. He also praised Pakistan’s efforts in fighting international terrorism.
The Governor General said that Australia was keenly watching the regional
situation including Pakistan-India dialogue and the situation in Afghanistan. He
also said that a large number of Pakistani students studying in Australian
Universities under a scholarship scheme announced by the Australian Government
would strengthen Pakistan-Australia bonds.
3. In his brief speech the High Commissioner conveyed the greetings and best
wishes of President Pervez Musharraf, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz and the people
of Pakistan to the Government and people of Australia. He said that Pakistan and
Australia enjoyed close and cordial relations and the two countries shared a
common desire to have peace and stability in the region including Afghanistan.
Pakistan-Australia trade and economic relations were showing an upward trend so
were the defence ties. He thanked the Australian Government for their earthquake
assistance, the scholarship programme and the Australian Government’s
understanding and support to Pakistan’s efforts against terrorism. He requested
the Australian investors to invest in Pakistan which offered tremendous
opportunities for investment in various sectors. Mr. Jilani also briefed the
Governor General about Pakistan-India dialogue and the situation in Afghanistan
as well as Pakistan’s efforts against international terrorism.
