High Commissioner Jalil Abbas Jilani meets Governor New South Wales Prof. Marie Bashir

The State Govt of NSW invited Mr Jalil Abbas Jilani, High Commissioner for the Islamic Republic of Pakistan to Australia & Mrs. Shaista Jilani for the first official visit of New South Wales from 09 June – 11 June 2008. During this official visit of NSW, H.E. Syed Jalil Abbas Jilani met government officials, ministers, experts and politicians.
On the Evening of 10th June, the Governor of New South Wales Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir received High Commissioner Jalil Jilani and Mrs. Jilani at Governor House Sydney. The High Commissioner was accompanied by Consul General of Pakistan in Sydney Mr. Azam Mohammed. Both sides exchanged views on matters of bilateral interest and underlined the need for enhanced cooperation for the mutual benefits of the two countries. The High Commissioner Jilani said that Pakistan attached greater importance to its ties with Australia and wanted to further build up its relations within divergent fields. The High Commissioner Mr. Jalil Abbas Jilani conveyed the greetings and best wishes of the people & Govt of Pakistan to the Government and people of Australia.

Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir

Professor Marie Bashir, the first woman to be appointed Governor of NSW, took up her office on 1 March 2001. Term extended in October 2004 until February 2008. Term extended in October 2007 until 2012.
Born of Lebanese descent in Narrandera in the Riverina district of NSW, and educated at Narrandera Public School and Sydney Girls High School, Marie Bashir gained her bachelor degrees in medicine and surgery in 1956 from the University of Sydney. Professor Bashir is married to Sir Nicholas Shehadie AC OBE and together they have three children and six grandchildren.
