We stand in
Solidarity with the People of Egypt
(Statement of the Hon.Shaoquett
Moselmane, the first Australian of Arabic-Lebanese-Muslim MP in the Parliament
of NSW)
We salute and honour the courage the People of Tunisia, Yemen and Egypt have displayed in their stance against corrupt dictatorial regimes, typical of the repressive and ruthless regimes that rule the Arab world.
The People of Egypt have risen against all odds and expectations without fear or hesitation even in the face of the most feared and ruthless Egyptian security apparatus.
They must now continue this great yet peaceful revolution against 30 years of oppressive rule.
Enough poverty, enough oppression, enough hunger and enough fear.
Mubarak and his clique must now go and immediately relinquish power to the people.
Mubarak must not be allowed to simply change players and continue to play the same game of oppressor and the oppressed.
Changes in the regime and changes to the System must not be superficial, they must be real and structural.
People are alert and can see through such shallow trickery of changing governments, appointing people and removing others while the Mubarak dictatorship remain in control.
Mubarak must go as should other oppressive Arab dictatorial regimes that strive on the fear they set in the hearts of their people. They must go and not be allowed to further religious, sectarian and ethnic divisions which they create in order to retain power and remain in control.
30 years of oppression and poverty must now end.
We salute the decent and honourable people of Egypt and stand by them in this historic Egyptian Intifada.
We call on the Egyptian Army to stand in solidarity with their people and not allow ruthless politicians order further death and destruction.
The Army should not only turn their guns away from their country men, but they should now stand by them and demand the expulsion and to trial all of those who have tortured, killed and oppressed people over the last 30 years.
Swearing in Intelligence Chief Omar Suleiman, head of the Mukhabarat, as Vice president of Egypt, will not save Mubarak and will not save his regime.
We hope that this will bring an end to his Regime and future regimes he seeks to establish under his son.
Appointing Suleiman, however, is clearly an indication that Mubarak has in fact lost the support of some within his party and in particular does not have the full support of the military.
The longer he clutches on to power, the longer the protesters will and must continue to revolt and protest throughout the streets of Egypt.
I hope that we will soon witness a new dawn of peace and prosperity and democratic rule for all Egyptians. Like all people, they desire nothing else but to live in peace and have a decent life and a hopeful future for their children and their children's children.
I also hope that all Egyptians and all peoples of the Arab world will look forward to a prosperous and brighter future, and live a decent life, providing food, shelter and education to all.
Finally, I hope that this and other Arab peoples revolutions will soon end, achieving all the demands of the people for a free and democratic society where power must always be in the hands of the people.
