Pakistan will Participate in National Multicultural Festival in Canberra
Last year, the
Festival entertained 125,000 people, the most successful to date, and again we
have managed to attract high quality local, national and international acts.
For ten days in February, Canberra hosts the spectacular National Multicultural
Festival, an annual tribute to cultural diversity. Dance, laugh, eat and drink
with people from all nations as the Capital City celebrates difference, sharing
traditions and performances from all parts of the planet. The 2008 Festival
program weaves together all the colourful communities that make up Australia
through comedy, performance art, food & wine stalls, street parties, live music,
circus-style acts, opera, dance and more. Highlights include a rip-roaring
street party in Dickson to welcome in the year of the Rat at the CFMEU/Tradies
Chinese New Year and stunning Australian premiers from International Acts: The
Ghana Dance Ensemble, Nour Amal Blind Eye Orchestra from Egypt, Gospel
Spectacular featuring the St James AME Mass Choir from New Jersey USA and the
breathtaking Shaanxi Song and Dance Troupe from China. Pakistan will participate
in Cultural activities.
2008 also marks the 5th birthday of National Multicultural Festival’s little
sister, The Fringe. There’s a hot circus vibe in the new Civic Square big-top
tent with artistic direction provided by Edinburgh Fringe 2007 award-winning
director Chenoeh Miller. The Fringe is the ultimate way to spend a summer night
with free shows and a bar for over 18’s. Expect everything from Performance Art
to great live music. Festival favourites returning include: the Fyshwick Markets
Food and Dance Spectacular, a feast of international cuisines with more than 190
stalls and four performance stages showcasing local, national and international
acts; cutting edge international cinema with the Dendy European Film Festival; a
sizzling slice of all things Latin American at the Hellenic Club Carnivale; and
by popular demand, Stopera! presents Opera by The Lake, the magical Festival
Finale held as the sun sets. Festival activities embrace the ACT from
Tuggeranong to Belconnen and electrify the heart of the city. From exhibitions
to free live shows, community showcases to premier performances by International
acts, there’s an event for everyone in the 2008 Festival Program.
