Pakistan hockey team under the management of Khwaja Mohammad Junaid has played excellent game of round one in the Lanco Super Series at Perth Hockey Stadium considering that, the team were only introduced to the new rules after they arrived in Australia.

On 20 October 2011 Pakistan Hockey Team displayed great team spirit. Their moral was high and appeared focused. The team is to be congratulated for handling themselves with great positivity, playing on Australian soil, following experimental Australian rules proved to be worthy opponents.

Program, “Dildar Pakistan” invited Damien Todorovic,  Senior Manager  - Club and Game Development of Hockey WA on 14 October 2011 to talk about Men’s Lanco Super Series and explain the new rules. Damien did a great job for the benefit of radio program listeners explaining the new rules after confessing like the writer that he is not really into hockey, however getting excited and looking forward to the series.

NEW RULE: If the ball crosses the goal-line off either a defender or attackers stick from anywhere in the field of play it is a long corner.  This should keep the ball in play instead of defenders and the ‘keeper watching the ball go over the back line.  The goalkeeper will have to kick the ball back into play to avoid a long corner and the opposition strikers will bear down on the clearance as the ball will be kept in play. Goalies may need to practice pin-point kicks to their full backs.

NEW RULE: More tolerance of foot contact and stick check to reduce unnecessary stoppages in play. If the ball hits the foot outside the circle and it doesn’t influence play i.e. non intentional use of foot then its play on.  This rule will allow the game to flow and proceed quickly and players with deft skills will use them to get around their opposition.  There is nothing as boring as a player finding a foot to get a free hit to stop the game and rebuild the team’s structure.  Normal rules apply inside the circle.  Pakistan and India should enjoy this freedom as their fast flowing game and quick skills could leave other teams in their wake.

NEW RULE: A third umpire will officiate on breaches if a player does not remain in the attacking half at all times.  Once the game commences one forward must go straight into the attacking half  This will stop players flooding defence.  It will also mean a sea gull forward can be waiting for a long ball or overhead to make the transition from end to end very fast.
