Pakistani young hockey team ought to be congratulated for their brilliant performance through the series that seemed to be improving consistently. Thrashing  arch-rivals India 4-1 in round three and claiming their first win in the 4 days Lanco International series  certainly was a treat for spectators and especially for handful loyal Pakistanis who almost lost their voices cheering for their team.

Khwaja Mohammad Junaid was humble on the win and delighted of course, but  at the same time appeared focused on the future.  In an earlier interview he stated that, “Every game carries expectations and pressure to win, especially the games played between Pakistan and India.”  It goes without saying that both teams are very aware of general public’s heightened emotional expectations.

Perth weather has never been so different as this season, which also effects the game due to playing conditions, however the team seems to have been acclimatised and will get further training while playing in Busselton, Bunbury and Perth until they go home in early November 2011.

We may have just witnessed a start of new era with innovative hockey tournament. The new rules may possibly change the future of hockey.

Round 2 on 21 October was indeed a memorable day. The game between Pakistan and India was attended by at least 150 Pakistanis gathered at the east end of hockey stadium due to  great efforts of Dr Zarrine Siddque.

Deputy High Commissioner Tasawar  Khan’s  effort to make some time from his busy schedule to watch the game with Pakistani local community was greatly appreciated.
