The Prime Minister of
Pakistan has launched an appeal for international assistance to meet the
colossal challenge of relief and reconstruction in the wake of extensive damage
caused to crops, properties and infrastructure by unprecedented flash floods.
Although initial assessments are being made a more accurate assessment would be
possible after the water recedes at the end of monsoons. A rough idea about the
scale of destruction could be made from an initial assessment of the damage as
below:

The damage caused due to flood mentioned above is as on 06 August 2010. As the
flood water ravages more areas, it is bound to escalate substantially. In
addition, irrigation channels/system, power transmission and telecommunication
lines, schools, hospitals, roads and bridges in affected areas have been damaged
beyond imagination. According to some rough estimates, the reconstruction of
650,000 alone would cost between US$2.0 to US$ 2.5 billion. The expenses on
reconstruction of roads, bridges, schools, hospitals, and repair of irrigation
system would cost even more.
The Pakistani Diaspora and all the other humanitarian organizations and
concerned individuals and agencies are requested to contribute generously. The
Prime Minister’s Flood Relief Fund 2010, has been established in Pakistan. The
