The Government and the
people of Pakistan are shocked and saddened by the senseless assassination of
Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, former Prime Minister of Pakistan and Chairperson of
Pakistan Peoples Party. Her assassination is a national tragedy and a great loss
for Pakistan.
2. President Pervez Musharraf has strongly condemned the barbaric terrorist
attack on Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and has offered his deepest condolences to her
family and to all those innocent people who lost their lives falling victim to
this heinous crime. Terming her assassination as a national tragedy, the
President said the heinous act was carried out by terrorists that the Government
and people of Pakistan are determined to fight and defeat. The assassination of
Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto will only unite the nation and strengthen our resolve to
fight terrorism and extremism.
3. The Government of Pakistan has declared three days of mourning during which
the national flag will fly at half mast as a mark of respect for Mohtarma
Benazir Bhutto. A Condolence Book has been opened at the Pakistan High
Commission to be signed by the Australian dignitaries and the members of the
Diplomatic Community.
