University of Western Australia’s Prof. Samina Yasmeen Received Western Australian Citizen of the Year 2011 Award
The Western Australian
Citizen of the Year Awards were first presented in 1973 by the Western Australia
Week Council, later renamed Celebrate WA, to provide the community with an
opportunity to honour the achievements and contribution of their fellow
citizens.
Each year, the State's most prestigious Awards acknowledge remarkable
individuals and organisations that motivate and inspire others through their
vision, leadership, talent, humility and spirit of community service.
Talented and dedicated recipients of all the awards are positive role models and exemplary Western Australians who have worked tirelessly for the community in which they live. Through their achievements they have reached their goals, inspired others and promoted pride and confidence in Western Australia.

On 28th May 2011. The 39th annual Western Australian Citizen of the Year Awards Presentation & Dinner was held at Burswood Entertainment Complex Perth. During the Function Govt of Western Australia, WA Citizen of the Year Awards 2011 was presented to Prominent Personality of Australian/ Pakistani community Dr.Professor Samina Yasmeen. Govt of Western Australia Recognises her outstanding exceptional leadership and commitment in the field of social justice, human rights, equality and anti-racism.
Samina Yasmeen
Professor Samina Yasmeen is a Professor in the School of Social and Cultural Studies at the University of Western Australia and Director of the Centre for Muslim States and Societies. She migrated to Australia in 1977 from Pakistan and has since achieved a distinguished record of academic achievement in the fields of human rights, Muslim minority affairs and foreign policy in the Indian Ocean region. She has edited three books and published 67 academic publications. She is also recognised as an outstanding teacher and has implemented a string of innovations to the teaching of international relations and the influences of Islam on world politics.
Dr. Samina is highly respected and renowned in government and academic circles for her contributions to research on Muslims in Australia since the early 1990s. Her passion has been to educate and inform the community, raise the level of understanding and build trust, tolerance, confidence, safety, respect and security for all. To achieve this, Prof Samina shares her knowledge with students, government, the Western Australia Police, the Australian Defence Force, the media and community at large. Her achievements have brought her widespread international recognition, with speaking invitations that have included the Central Intelligence Agency in Washington, Sciences Po in Paris and the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London.
