(1) Mohammad Shakoor Ex. President of IAWSS is struggling for his life in a Nursing Home

              Dear Sada-e-Watan readers, Assalamu Alaikum

The one of the best Community worker I come across Br. Mohammad Shakoor is currently struggling  for his life in Bossley Park Nursing Home Sydney.Br. Shakoor was diagnosed brain tumour over six years ago when he was in late 60s. Soon after he was operated at Westmead Hospital Sydney.Though he did survive the major operation. However, he was unable to maintain his active life since then. Over an year ago he was again diagnosed  the re-appearance of brain tumour. And his family in consultation with the medical experts decided not to get him operated again.

On my last visit on Friday 16 April 2010, I found him very week and his memory is fading too. On entrance  to the room he was sharing with other three, he did recognise me by face. And asked me to call the Nursing staff to clean him up as he could not get anyone to do so for some time. After the staff got him clean, I asked Shakoor saheb would he like to go on wheel chair outside to have a bit of fresh air. He readily agreed.

Shakoor Saheb was born in Faisalabad (Pakistan) and associated in teaching. He was married at Kampala (Uganda) with Shugufta Bhabi whose parent were also from Pakistan. Shakoor Saheb came to Australia with his wife and a daughter back at early 1970s. Shakoor Saheb has been a teacher in public Schools for a long time. My family association with Br. Shakoor's family goes back to 1979. I still remember during the initial period of fund raising for Rooty Hill Mosque and School projects, after the job he used to come to my office at Alcatel-ST, Alexandria to collect small or large amount of donations and encourage each others.

Br. Shakoor has been President, Gen. Secretary and Treasurer of Islamic Association Western Suburbs Sydney (IAWSS) and still he and his family are the foundation members.I feel sorry when Shakoor Saheb tells me very few community members come and visit him. As we all know Br. Shakoor case is not an isolated one. There are many community members who are in similar if not the same situations.

There is no doubt we do need accommodations, aged cares and nursing homes where our community members in need can live within our cultural environment and be able to maintain values, respect, independence and at the same time be able to communicate with their love ones.

With best wishes to you all
