Pakistan’s Navy Chief Admiral Muhammad Afzal Tahir on official tour to Australia
Every two years the Chief
of Royal Australian Navy hosts the RAN Sea Power Conference in Sydney, and
Pacific 2008 International Maritime Conference was held between 29-31 January
2008 in the Sydney Exhibition and Convention Centre, Darling Harbour Sydney.
This conference has become one of the major naval and maritime events in the
world and the Chiefs of many navies from around the world attend this
conference.
The conference was organised by the Sea Power Centre – Australia and was formed
part of the prestigious Pacific International Maritime and Naval Exposition. The
RAN Sea Power Conference has become a significant event in the national and
international maritime and security communities for its discussion on topical
naval and maritime strategic issues. According to details provided to
Sada-e-Watan, approximately 800 delegates registered for the 2008 conference.
The Chief of the Pakistan Naval Staff, Admiral Muhammad Afzal Tahir came to
Australia to attend this conference.
Last session of the conference was on Thursday, 31 January. Before the closing
ceremony Admiral Muhammad Afzal Tahir spoke about the regional security
challenges in the Aurbian Sea. International dignities & High Commissioner of
Pakistan to Australia Syed Jalil Abbas Jilani, Consul General Azam Mohammed and
Defence Advisor Brig. Babar Mansoor Virk met in Sydney with Pakistan’s Navy
chief Admiral Muhammad Afzal Tahir.

Admiral Muhammad Afzal Tahir
M. A. Tahir was born in
Faisalabad on January 4 1949. He is the chief of naval since October 2005. He
took over the command of Pakistan Navy from Admiral Shahid Karimullah.
He joined the navy in 1967 and was commissioned in the operations branch in
1970. He saw action in the 1971 war. The admiral joined naval aviation in 1973
and was later appointed helicopter warfare instructor. He is a graduate of the
Joint Services Staff College (JSSC) and National Defence College of Pakistan. He
has vast experience of staff and command appointments. His staff appointments
include deputy chief of naval staff (operations), deputy chief of naval staff
(projects), chief staff officer to the Pakistan fleet commander and instructor
at the JSSC. His command assignments include the command of a guided missile
destroyer and command of naval aviation. His last command appointment was as the
commander of the Pakistan fleet. He is a recipient of the Sitara-e-Imtiaz and
Hilal-e-Imtiaz. He is married and has three daughters and two sons.
