Sadia Saeed's Opinion regarding Emergency rule in Pakistan
Hi Zafar Sahib,
I speak for the younger
generation of Pakistanis living here when I say, its difficult to know whether
to laugh or cry at the way our middle-aged politicians are behaving like 2 year
old spoilt brats! House arresting opponents, and smothering freedom of speech
when it goes against them.
Living here, where I am free to openly criticize Howard or Rudd or Beazily or
Bush, it feels like Pakistan has gone into the dark ages. It is well known that
the Fox News Network here in Australia and the USA is commonly used for
propaganda against Muslims, but up till now I had thought comparatively,
Pakistani media was relatively free and unbiased. That is until this week when I
have found that Pakistan has its own 'Fox Network'. its called PTV.
For the past week, I have not seen a single point of view being expressed which
goes against the government. When most of the international community has
expressed concern at the emergency situation in Pakistan, I can guarantee that
there is at least a minority -if not a large proportion- of people who are
unhappy with the situation in Pakistan. Yet all we hear is 'Emergency rule is a
good thing', and 'Musharraf is the best politician in Pakistan'. This distortion
of the truth and public opinion by state-controlled PTV would be laughable if it
wasn't so serious. Unless they drastically mend their behaviour, these
politicians will go down in history not as 'legendary leaders' but as
'laughing-stocks'.
Regards,
Sadia Saeed ( Sydney)
