Trusting Pakistan- Presenter: Jenny Brockie
Exclusive Report to Sada-e-Watan for SBS TV Programme "Insight" on Pakistan
Following the death of Osama bin Laden in a covert operation
by US forces in Abbotabad, Pakistan has come under the sharp focus of
international media. There undue negativity was spread based on either lack of
information or under an agenda to bring more pressure on Pakistan. Questions
were also raised about Pakistan’s commitment and capacity to combat terrorism.
How do Pakistan’s leaders would strike balance between their cooperation with
the West on the one hand and anti-US sentiment among the population on the
other. The fears of reprisal attacks became a reality after the heavily armed
gunmen attacked a naval base in the country's biggest city Karachi.
Against this background, SBS TV "Insight" programme invited approximately fifty
participants to discuss the theme "Trusting Pakistan". The prominent amongst the
participants were the Acting High Commissioner of Pakistan, Mr. Tasawar Khan,
Professor Dr. Samina Yasmin, Director of the Centre for Muslim States and
Societies at the University of Western Australia, Professor Amin Saikal,
Director of the Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies (The Middle East and Central
Asia) at the Australian National University and Brigadier Retired Naeem Salik. A
number of Australian nationals and some prominent Pakistani Australians also
participated in the discussion. The programme can be viewed online at:
