Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) is an international Non-Governmental, non-political Organisation for development (NGO) founded and Based in Birmingham, UK in 1984 with partner offices in over 30 countries that co-ordinate, fundraise for and implement its emergency and development programmes.. We envisage a caring world where people unite to respond to the suffering of others, empowering them to fulfil their potential.
IRW was established by Dr Hany el Banna and fellow students from the University of Birmingham, in response to the famine in africa. It has since grown into a respected worldwide organisation with seven figure budgets, giving millions of people a lifeline out of poverty and hope for a better future.
Inspired by Islamic humanitarian values we are working in over 25 countries, to promote sustainable economic and social development by cooperating with local communities to eradicate poverty, illiteracy and disease,responding to disasters and emergencies, helping people in crisis regardless of religion, ethnicity or gender and without expecting anything in return.
At the international level, IRW has consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council, and is a signatory to the International Red cross and Red crescent code of conduct. IRW is committed to the millennium Development Goals (MDGs) through raising awareness of the issues that affect poor communities and through its work on the ground.
