Shahnaz Sheikh & PM Shaukat Aziz

Pakistan's Federal Minister of State for Health Shahnaz Sheikh welcomed the passage of Women Protection Bill by the National Assembly and said it will go a long way in removing discriminatory laws against women. Appreciating the passage of the bill, she criticized the elements opposing the Bill adding that it would ensure the rights of women. She said there are people in politics, who are using religion in their pursuit to gain political power. Shahnaz Sheikh said these elements claim monopoly on the religion, but unfortunately don’t have the right perception of universal values of Islam. She emphasized the fact that majority of Pakistanis are Muslims and no Muslim can even think of a law which is repugnant to Islam. This, however, doesn’t mean that the viewpoint of a particular section of the society is taken to be the final word, she added. The Minister said the amendment in the Hudood Ordinance has removed the flaws.

Shahnaz Sheikh said, Islam is a religion of peace, harmony and promoting inter-faith harmony. It teaches justice and fair play without any discrimination on the basis of gender.
