State
of life vs. Quality of life – A Community prospective
(By: Qamar Khan –

Dear Brothers & Sisters in
Islam, friends, relatives & readers of Sada-e-Watan
Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahe Wabarakatahu,
Alhamadullilah, we are thankful to Allah SWT for the blessings we have been
enjoying in our life. However, none of us could predict how our own, family,
friends or community members’ life would be in future or even next very moment.
In my limited study, Islam does promote us to be prepared in this life and for
life thereafter. As we often say, “ O Allah keep us active physically & mentally
up-till we expire!”
The objective of these few lines is to share the observations and evaluations in
view to help each other in need.
Most of us enjoy excellent life while no major handicap physically & mentally
and have family/spouse support. But there are ups and down in our lives.
Below are few states of life when life-quality goes down and possible help is
needed from community individuals or Association’s resources:
1) Physical disability but able to carry out most of the work. And have
family/spouse support;
2) Permanent physical disability but able to join work force after
rehabilitation. And have family/spouse support;
3) Some physical and partial mental disabilities but able to move around; go to
the toilet, make-up bed and basic house-hold-works. And have family/spouse
support;
4) Person has terminal or aged related ailment with restricted mobility need
assistance to go to the toilet. Able to breath, eat, drink and talk; But have
limited family and spouse support; No long term stay at Public Hospital possible
on 24 hour per day basis;
5) Long term aged related ailment with traces of Parkinson-disease or dementia.
Unable to move around without assistance or go to the toilet except to breath,
eat and drink; Have limited or no family or spouse support; No long term stay at
Public Hospital possible on 24 hour per day basis; Financial condition does not
allow private nurse availability on daily basis;
As you can imagine for our background, life states (4) & (5) are the most
difficult to go through. Therefore, in some instances our occasional welfare
calls or visits can uplift the mood and brighten up the mind-set of the person.
One of my close friends, associate and great community worker is going through
the hardship of life similar to sates (4) or (5) above. His name is Mohammad
Shakoor who was born in Shahpur, Distt Ludhiana in East Punjab around 71 years
ago. Currently he is in Nepean Hospital at Penrith after having a fall from his
bed few days ago. Subsequent to Br. Shakoor brain-tumour operation few years
ago, he had couple of falls and broke his hipbones. Br. Shakoor was President of
Islamic Association Western Suburbs Sydney (Rooty-Hill projects) during 1988-90.
He made tremendous efforts to secure the land back in 1985. Should any one like
to give Br. Shakoor a welfare phone-call, his residence number is (02) 9623
5568. (Recent photo is attached)
Another well-known community worker most of us know is Mr. Iqbal Zaki. Though
currently he is at his residence with wife and son, however his life state is
similar to that of (3) above. Mr. Iqbal Zaki can be contacted by mobile
0419223320 or (02) 9558 8095

Mr. Iqbal Zaki Mr. Shakoor
Today, I have also paid a welfare home visit to our senior Pakistani icon and Community worker Mr. Murghoob E. Qureshi. Mr. Qureshi was born in Lahore on 7th January 1926. And arrived in Australia back in 1960. His services towards Pakistan Association and King Faisal Mosque at Surrey Hill are enormous. Mr. Qureshi can be contacted over phone at his residence on (02) 9661 3787.
