Acting High Commissioner of Pakistan attends International Service Evening of Rotary Club of Corrimal

High Commissioner of Pakistan was invited as Guest speaker at the International
Service Evening organized by Rotary Club of Corrimal at the University of
Wollongong on 27th April 2011. The event was attended by Mr. Philip Whyte,
District Governor, Deputy Vice Chancellor of University of Wollongong, a large
number of Rotarians and selected international students from University of
Wollongong.
The International and Foundation Director Mr. Don Love introduced the Acting
High Commissioner while the President of Rotary Club Mr. Tony Parker thanked him
for traveling all the way from Canberra to Wollongong for the event and address
the gathering on Pakistan Australia relations and Pakistan’s role in
international efforts against terrorism.
The Acting High Commissioner spoke on the history and development of bilateral
relations between the two countries. Highlighting the commonalities between the
two countries, he expressed satisfaction on the excellent Australia Pakistan
relations, which are underpinned by a mutual desire to further strengthen these
relations, especially in the field of trade and investment. He presented
Pakistan’s perspective on developments along Pakistan’s Western border and
informed the participants about the sacrifices made by the people and Armed
Forces of Pakistan in fight against extremism and terrorism. In terms of human
losses, Pakistan’s contribution to international efforts against terrorism is
greater than any other country in the world. Similarly the financial cost of
this war is now estimated more than US$35 billion. Pakistan continues to host
over 1.5 million Afghan refugees on its soil. He said that international
community needs to understand and support Pakistan, as losing this war is
neither an option for Pakistan not for the world. He aptly responded to a number
of questions raised by the audience.
The President of Rotary Club of Corrimal Mr. Tony Parker thanked the Acting High
Commissioner for his informative discourse, which provided a new insight on a
subject of immense importance to the world.
