Waverly Council announced Free Hall & $ 5,000 donation for earthquake relief
Mayoral Minute 18 October 2005
That (a) in view of the recent earthquake affecting parts of Kashmir, Pakistan and India - perhaps the most devastating natural disaster ever to have afflicted the region - one which has resulted in the deaths of more than 39,000 people, the destruction of homes, hospitals, schools, roads, and water and power facilities, and
(b) The need, in a time of festering divisions fostered by war, religious, ethnic and social tensions, Council recognises the need to assert our common humanity and to respond appropriately. Council therefore
1. Agrees to donate $5000 to assist in relief work; and 2. Investigates supporting the fundraising efforts of the Pakistan Earthquake Appeal Committee by waiving venue hire fees if the committee wishes to hold a fundraising event at one of Council’s facilities. 3. Delegates authority to the Mayor & General Manager to determine the appropriate agency to receive Council’s donation.
Background: Leaders in the Australian Pakistani community have established a Pakistan Earthquake Appeal Co-ordination Committee (PEACC) to assist with coordinating aid efforts for the earthquake victims. They have expressed interest in holding a fundraising event in the Eastern Suburbs and are seeking an appropriate venue.
